Finest Television Choices: Seven Must-Watch Motion Pictures This Week

Pick of the Week

This Satirical Thriller

Director Coralie Fargeat's daring satire addresses the tyranny of feminine aesthetics along with the feared consequences of advancing years. Demi Moore presents an inspired portrayal in the role of Elisabeth, an aging actress demoted to starring in a fitness program on TV. Pushed out thanks to her unscrupulous employer Harvey, played by Dennis Quaid, she turns to a secretive and terrifying treatment titled "The Substance". This generates a younger clone portrayed by Margaret Qualley, leading to a progressively parasitic dynamic between them. Friday 17 October, the streaming service Paramount+

The Woman in Cabin 10 Film

This Agatha Christie-esque story includes Keira Knightley playing Laura, an ace reporter who decides to take a break from reporting on global conflict to board an opulent ship with a terminally ill wealthy inheritor and charitable figure, her husband, and other extremely wealthy individuals. Yet once an enigmatic female disappears from the ship one night and all passengers claims she was never there, the reporter's sleuthing skills kick in. Streaming currently, the Netflix platform

Presence

The acclaimed director tests his directorial skills in this clever paranormal narrative shot entirely from the perspective of the phantom. When a household with Lucy Liu as Rebekah plus Callina Liang as Chloe settles into their recent residence, the camera – as the unseen entity – shadows their actions. The teen shows signs of conscious of the poltergeist, and it looks like guarding her. However, the motive remains? This is an entertaining concept that remains concise, including a revelation that could catch you off guard. October 11th, afternoon and evening times, the Sky channel

This Self-Referential Film

Nicolas Cage fully commits to his unique fame via this autobiographical spoof. He portrays a narcissistic Hollywood actor playing himself who accepts a lucrative offer to visit a festive event at a Mediterranean location for billionaire Javi Gutierrez. Contacted by the intelligence agency to investigate the suspected cartel boss, the actor's unique performing skills comes in handy. Saturday 11 October, prime time, Channel 4

The Black Phone

The director's locked-room horror remains effective despite the lack of a follow-up. Located in the late 70s in Denver, multiple kidnappings has left the children frightened. When Finney is taken by the villain and imprisoned in a basement, he fears the worst. But the disconnected phone on the wall keeps ringing, with ghostly voices providing assistance, while the prescient dreams of Gwen, his sister may be his salvation. A genuinely scary movie. This Saturday, 10.50pm, on Film4

The Tammy Faye Biopic

In the conflict between spirituality and money, it's a knockout win for Mammon in Michael Showalter's brilliantly over-the-top film adaptation about the fallen religious broadcaster and her criminal husband. Garfield plays the venal Jim, who states initially, “God does not want us to be poor,”. He and Tammy Faye set about monetising the people's Christian beliefs. It's a spectacle of poor styling, bad makeup and hypocrisy, though Jessica Chastain succeeds to present the character in a likable light. October 14th, 1.15am, on Film4

The Spy Mystery

This period's second offering by the same director is a intelligence thriller as sharp as the polo necks worn by Fassbender's UK spy. He receives a mission to discover a double agent among the team from a group of five – one of whom is his spouse. Each performer are masters of understated style, resulting in an engaging mental battle of deception or honesty develops. Tom Burke, Regé-Jean Page, Naomie Harris and Marisa Abela join in the intelligent intelligence fun. Friday 17 October, multiple time slots, the Sky channel
