Delhi Awakens to Toxic Haze Post Festival of Lights
As Tuesday dawned inhabitants of the planet's dirtiest urban center were faced with breathing severely hazardous air that registered in the "critical" level.
Alarming Pollution Measurements
Multiple areas of Delhi registered an AQI over 500, which equals 10x the healthy level established by the global health authority.
Certain monitoring stations, levels of dangerous airborne particles reached peaks of eighteen hundred, amounting to 15-20x exceeding safe levels.
Firecracker Ban and New Changes
Beginning in 2020, the government had enforced a comprehensive restriction on the sale and use of firecrackers during celebrations due to their major role to the dangerous pollution that engulfs the metropolis as the cold season begins.
Yet recently, the recently formed local government appealed to the judicial authority to propose a relaxation of the prohibition.
Officials advocated for allowing "green crackers" – previously doubted by environmental experts as being only approximately one-third lower impact – as a balance between "tradition and ecological concerns".
Legal Ruling and Implementation
Much to the frustration of public health and environmental advocates, the court complied with the proposal, mandating that environmentally conscious fireworks could be used during limited hours throughout the celebrations.
Throughout the festival evening, there was extensive disregard of the designated hours across the metropolis, with minimal regulation regarding whether the fireworks being used were actually the eco-friendly version.
Many monitoring devices throughout the city recorded pollution spiking around the night hours to some of the worst readings recorded during celebrations in at least three years.
Cross-Border Implications
The proliferation of firecrackers during the celebrations also triggered a blame game with neighbouring Pakistan, with authorities in Pakistan's Punjab partly blaming declining pollution levels in Lahore on contaminants coming from India following the events.
Chronic Environmental Crisis
The dangerously high readings of atmospheric toxins in the city have persisted as a serious challenge for fifteen-plus years, with the condition gradually deteriorating.
Around Diwali, the levels of toxic airborne contaminants in the air has been observed to increase dramatically to significantly exceeding the peak records ever documented in China's capital, which was previously regarded as the world's most polluted urban center.
Diverse Contamination Sources
The problem in Delhi is caused by a mix of different contributors including heavy vehicle emissions, dust, building projects, garbage fires and pollutants from crop residue ignition in adjacent states of farming communities.
Within these states, agricultural workers regularly set their fields on fire to clear them quickly, generating toxic smog that remains stagnant over the metropolitan area as cooler air sets in.
Public Health and Financial Impact
Both financial and medical consequences on the nearly 33 million people calling home the metropolitan zone is substantial, according to multiple research.
The contaminated air leads to increased incidence of neurological, cardiovascular and respiratory disorders, and can potentially cause cancer.
Air quality crisis is calculated to be accounting for ten thousand early deaths each year in the city.
