Can You Crack It? The Overlooked Dutch Creation That Forged the Contemporary World

One can find many contenders to claim the designation as “planet’s greatest innovation.” The circular axle. The movable type. The steam engine.

According to a recent publication, however, that title belongs to the automated sawmill conceived through Dutchman Corneliszoon van Uitgeest during 1593.

“Before automated cutting, building a modest trading ship necessitated approximately 10 lumberjacks laboring for three months,” notes Jaime Dávila. “With wind-powered lumber mills, the same quantity of processed timber could be produced within a week.”

Thanks to this rapid automated saw, which turned timber to planks using almost no manual labor, the Dutch could build ships faster compared to anyone else, which sparked one hundred years of Netherlands naval, economic as well as cultural dominance in the continent and the world.
