A deadly railway accident in the Mexican state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident likely to revive censure from critics regarding the speed and execution of the country's key infrastructure initiatives.
The accident occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link developed to join the Atlantic and Pacific across the narrowest part of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This endeavor was designed to establish an alternative rail cargo route to the Panama Canal, aimed at driving regional growth in the area.
“We are going to thoroughly investigate the reasons behind this tragedy,” affirmed the country's president.
The leader announced that, of the around 250 individuals on board, another 98 were wounded, with five of those in serious condition. The official stated plans to go to Oaxaca to speak with those affected.
Flagship Project of Previous Administration
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the immediate past president, whose presidency concluded the previous year. This rail line was closely associated with his government's economic agenda for the southern region.
Another multi-billion dollar train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also central to the wider plan to stimulate the economy of a historically disadvantaged part of the country.
Construction Oversight and Risks Apprehensions
The construction of both train projects was overseen by the nation's military, marking a significant increase of its responsibilities in public works. They were executed at an fast-tracked rate, surpassing forecasts to be partially inaugurated before the end of that government.
However, this accelerated timeline had simultaneously raised significant concerns over construction quality.
- Sunday's crash was the third occurrence on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This involves an previous crash this month when a train hit a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also seen several non-fatal derailments.
Calls for Investigation and Halt
In the wake of the catastrophe, the leader of a major opposition party urged an urgent halt in the building and running of all such projects.
This halt was requested pending a thorough independent investigation. The party declared that the tragedy "demands immediate answers."
In response, the president insisted that the train had been functioning in full adherence to all safety requirements. Assurances were given that the government would be "diligent" in both the development and operation of these vital initiatives.
